VIENNA (Dow Jones)--The number of jobless in Austria fell 12% on the year in March to 210,456, the Austrian Ministry of Labor and Economy said Tuesday.
The unemployment rate, according to the Eurostat calculation method, was reduced to 4.2% in March, an improvement of 0.3 percentage points from 4.5% in March 2007, and of 0.1 percentage point from the February 2008 rate, the ministry also said.
Austrian men benefitted slightly more from the positive development than the women, the ministry said.
The figures revealed that 13% fewer men were unemployed at the end of March than a year earlier, while 9% fewer women were recorded as jobless.
Eurostat is the Statistical Office of the European Community, tasked with providing the European Union with harmonized statistics under a single methodology.
